Scale Considerations
and the Detectability of
Sedimentary Cumulative Watershed Effects
Kristin Bunte and Lee MacDonald
NCASI Technical
Bulletin No. 776
January
1999

This report is a comprehensive study of the effects
of temporal and spatial scale on cumulative sediment effects. The principal focus is on the extent to which
potential increases in sediment load from forest management activities
can be transported downstream, our ability to detect these changes,
and the extent to which these cumulative effects are scale dependent. The report is a valuable compendium of what
we know about sediment, how variable it is, how it moves through
the stream system, and would make an excellent addition to anyone’s
technical library about sediment.
