Sediment Technology
for the 21st Century
John Gray, U.S. Geological Survey, and Larry Schmidt, U.S. Forest
Service, organized a workshop at which representatives of 11 U.S.
agencies unanimously concurred that new sediment technologies are
needed to measure sediment less expensively, more safely, and with
greater statistical reliability in order to effectively manage the
nation's rivers, estuaries, and coasts. Technologies examined included
optical, acoustical, laser, and other technologies to measure suspended-sediment,
bedload, or bed topography by remote or manual means, operated in
real-time, time-lagged, synoptic or other modes in field or laboratory
settings.
